Most families who reach Omega Functional Health have already been through the diagnostic process. Their child has a label, sometimes more than one. ADHD. Autism spectrum disorder. Developmental coordination disorder. Sensory processing disorder. Global developmental delay.
These diagnoses are not wrong. The professionals who gave them were thorough. The evaluations were appropriate. And the diagnoses opened doors to services, supports, and accommodations that the child genuinely needed.
But a diagnosis is a description of symptoms organized into a recognizable pattern. It is not an explanation of the neurological mechanism driving those symptoms. And for families of children with developmental delay in Colorado, that distinction matters enormously, because the path forward looks different depending on which question you are trying to answer.
What a Diagnosis Tells You and What It Does Not
When a child is diagnosed with ADHD, the diagnosis tells you that the child has a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that is inconsistent with their developmental level and that is affecting their functioning in multiple settings. It does not tell you why those patterns exist in this child’s brain, which neural systems are underperforming, whether the brainstem-level foundations of attention have been adequately established, or whether retained primitive reflexes are generating chronic sympathetic activation that looks like hyperactivity from the outside.
When a child is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, the diagnosis tells you that the child has persistent differences in social communication and social interaction alongside restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior or sensory responses. It does not tell you whether those differences are rooted in hemispheric imbalance, which side of the brain is developing more slowly, or whether the vestibular and proprioceptive systems that underpin social attunement and body awareness have been adequately integrated.
Dr. Robert Melillo has spent three decades arguing, and publishing research to support, that ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, sensory processing disorder, and the full spectrum of childhood neurodevelopmental conditions are not distinct problems with separate causes. They are different expressions of the same underlying condition: a brain out of balance. Specifically, Functional Disconnection Syndrome, in which the electrical communication between the left and right hemispheres of the brain is disrupted because one hemisphere has developed more slowly than the other.

This does not make the diagnosis wrong. It means the diagnosis is operating at the level of symptoms while the underlying mechanism is operating at the level of the nervous system. Both levels matter. But only one of them points directly to what needs to change neurologically.
Why the Neurological Explanation Changes the Approach
If ADHD is primarily a brain imbalance, with a slower-developing right hemisphere failing to adequately regulate the left, and with retained primitive reflexes generating bottom-up interference that disrupts the prefrontal cortex’s ability to sustain attention, then the most direct approach is not managing the symptoms of inattention. It is identifying and addressing the hemispheric imbalance and the retained reflex patterns driving it.
This is not an argument against behavioral therapy, educational accommodations, or medication where appropriate. Those interventions have their place and their evidence base. Dr. Melillo is explicit that medication can be appropriate for children with severe symptoms. The argument is that those interventions, applied without addressing the underlying neurological substrate, are working around the problem rather than at its source.
Research from the Harvard University validation study of the Brain Balance Program, conducted by Dr. Martin Teicher at McLean Hospital, found that structured, multimodal neurological intervention targeting hemispheric imbalance produced changes in brain connectivity consistent with improvements in attention, hyperactivity, executive function, and behavioral regulation. The study concluded that the effects were comparable to pharmacological treatment and, critically, that the changes persisted at reassessment seven months later.

What an Explanation-Focused Evaluation Looks Like
The neurological evaluation at Omega Functional Health is not designed to add another diagnosis to a child’s record. It is designed to answer the question that the diagnostic process often leaves open: what is actually happening in the nervous system, and what does that mean for how this child can be helped?
The evaluation is examination-driven and includes direct assessment of primitive reflex integration, oculomotor function, vestibulo-ocular reflex integrity, cerebellar coordination and timing, postural stability, proprioceptive integration, and autonomic tone. These findings are reviewed alongside a detailed developmental history, prior evaluations, and school reports.
The result is a neurological picture of which systems are underperforming, how those underperformances connect to the child’s day-to-day presentation, and what a targeted program of sensory-motor and hemispheric integration work should address. That program is structured over a 90-day framework with built-in reassessment points and a clear picture of how the nervous system is responding over time.
